After all, she appeared as if by magic at exactly the right moment of our nation’s cultural pivot — the era of the Civil Rights movement — and became the perfect spokeswoman of that highly transformational era. Why was it that at a time when most great female jazz singers kept away from politics — and even most soul singers at Motown projected an aura of conformist glamour — Simone eagerly lept into the fray, proudly planting her flag as a black woman who wasn’t going to take anything from anybody? It’s time to take a closer look at the incredible career of this remarkable artist — from her influences to the highs and lows behind her amazing achievements.

Join New York Adventure Club as we take a deep dive into the musical legacy of Nina Simone, an incredibly accomplished American singer, pianist, songwriter, and bandleader of the mid-20th century whose take-no-prisoners attitude toward challenging the status quo of race and gender — or her music itself — helped spark social and political change in America.

Led by award-winning author Will Friedwald, who is widely considered one of the nation’s most prolific music writers, our journey through the incredible life and music of Nina Simone will include:

– A deep dive into her early years including becoming a concert piano prodigy who, at a young age, was accepted to study at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music
