Hiwwe wie Driwwe: Pennsylvania Dutch Documentary Free Showing

Firefly Bookstore in conjunction with the Kutztown Strand Theater and the Kutztown Folk Festival will hosting a showing of the documentary film “Hiwwe wie Driwwe: The Roots of Pennsylvania Dutch”, created and produced by Benjamin Wagener and Christian Schega and released by Calimedia/Cinewa in 2019.
Run time is 90 minutes, and is in English.
This is a FREE showing, and everyone is welcome to attend and learn more of the linguistic and cultural connections between the Palatinate regions of Germany and Eastern Pennsylvania.
Firefly Bookstore and the Strand are helping to celebrate the 2021 Kutztown Folk Festival which is the oldest continuously operated folklife festival in America. This multi-day event continues to draw visitors from all over the world, entertaining families while providing valuable insight into the traditions of the Pennsylvania Dutch and their fascinating way of life.

The documentary HIWWE WIE DRIWWE is a search for traces of the Palatinate language and culture – in Germany and America. World premiere was on April 13, 2019 in Landau, followed by a cinema tour through other cinemas throughout the Palatinate language area, and in PA and other locations in America.
The two Palatinate filmmakers Benjamin Wagener (directing, producing, camera, editing) Christian Schega (directing and producing) and have been working together on HIWWE WIE DRIWWE since 2015. 2017 was shot in the United States and Germany. The project was funded by the Rhineland-Palatinate Cultural Foundation, the Palatinate Regional Association, the Germersheim-Kandel Sparkassen Foundation and numerous crowdfunders.
